چکیده

Fifty-four ultracompact (UC) H ii regions in the GLIMPSE survey region (jbj < 1 and 30 < l < 70 ) were observed in H2CO and H110 using the 305 m Arecibo telescope. By analyzing H2CO absorption against the UC H ii region continuum emission, we resolve the distance ambiguity toward 44 sources. This determination is critical to measure global physical properties of UCH ii regions (e.g., luminosity, size, mass) and properties of the Galaxy (e.g., spiral structure, abundance gradients). We find that the distribution of UC H ii regions in this survey is consistent with a ‘‘ local spur,’’ the Perseus, Sagittarius, and Scutum arms as delineated by Taylor & Cordes. However, departures from model velocities produce distance uncertainties only slightly smaller than the proposed arm separations. Scaling relations in dynamical evolution of star clusters

We have carried out a series of small scale collisional N-body calculations of single-mass star clusters to investigate the dependence of the lifetime of star clusters on their initial parameters. Our models move through an external galaxy potential with a logarithmic density profile and they are limited by a cut-off radius. In order to find scaling relations between the lifetime of star cluste...

Resolving distance ambiguities towards 6.7 GHz methanol masers

Context. Distances to most star forming regions are determined using kinematics, through the assumption that the observed radial velocity arises from the motion of the source with respect to the Sun resulting from the differential rotation of Galaxy. The primary challenge associated with the application of this technique in the inner Galaxy is the kinematic distance ambiguity. Aims. In this wor...

We report simultaneous H110α and H 2 CO line observations with the NRAO Green Bank Telescope toward 72 H II regions in the SPITZER/GLIMPSE survey area (|l| = 10 • − 65 • and |b| ≤ 1 •). We used the H110α line to establish the velocity of the H II regions and H 2 CO absorption lines to distinguish between near and far distances. Accurate distances are crucial for the determination of physical pr...

The formation history of elliptical galaxies

We take advantage of the largest high-resolution simulation of cosmic structure growth ever carried out – the Millennium Simulation of the concordance ΛCDM cosmogony – to study how the star formation histories, ages and metallicities of elliptical galaxies depend on environment and on stellar mass. We concentrate on a galaxy formation model which is tuned to fit the joint luminosity/colour/morp...

The RMS Survey: Galactic distribution of massive star formation

We have used the well-selected sample of ∼1750 embedded, young, massive stars identified by the Red MSX Source (RMS) survey to investigate the Galactic distribution of recent massive star formation. We present molecular-line observations for ∼800 sources without existing radial velocities. We describe the various methods used to assign distances extracted from the literature, and solve the dist...
